In Nigeria’s fast-growing digital economy, opportunity continues to expand. Yet for many young people, especially those from underserved communities, access to skills, tools, and structured learning remains limited.
To help bridge this gap, Plungesmile Foundation, the CSR arm of Reliance Infosystems, has partnered with the Justice Development and Peace Center (JDPC), to deliver Cohort 2 of the Youth Skills Development and Support Initiative. The programme provides three months of hands-on digital skills training for 80 underprivileged youths aged 18–35, based in Sabo, Yaba, Lagos.
This initiative is designed with a clear goal: to equip young people with practical, market-relevant digital skills and support them toward sustainable income opportunities.
Responding to the Digital Skills Gap
Despite a growing demand for digital talent locally and globally, many young people from low‑income communities face multiple barriers: the high cost of training, limited access to devices and internet, and curricula that are often disconnected from real‑world demand.
The JDPC–PlungeSmile partnership was designed as a direct response to these challenges. The programme focuses on practical, market‑relevant digital skills, with the clear objective of improving employability, supporting self‑reliance, and creating viable economic pathways for participants.
Andy Akukwe, Vice President of Plungesmile Foundation, explains:
“We see ability and ambition every day. What is often missing is access. This programme is about removing that barrier and giving young people the tools they need to compete and succeed.”
What the Programme Delivers
The three-month training covers four in-demand digital tracks and soft skills selected for their relevance in today’s job market:
- Cybersecurity Fundamentals
- Data Analysis
- Web Design
- UI/UX Design
- Content Creation
- Digital Marketing
- LinkedIn Optimization and Personal Branding
The programme is delivered using a blended learning model that includes instructor-led sessions, hands-on labs, project-based assignments, continuous assessment, and weekly mentorship. Each participant builds a portfolio of work that can be presented to employers or clients at the end of the programme.
Why Digital Skills Matter for Underserved Youths
Across Lagos, many young people are motivated and capable. However, they face persistent barriers such as the high cost of training, limited access to computers and reliable internet, and learning programmes that do not align with employer needs.
Without targeted support, this gap limits employability and reinforces cycles of underemployment and exclusion.
The Youth Skills Development and Support Initiative responds directly to this challenge. It focuses on practical learning, guided mentorship, and real-world application, ensuring that participants gain skills they can use immediately in the workplace or the freelance economy.
Programme Kick-Off: Orientation and Induction
The initiative officially began with a One-Day Orientation and Induction Programme in Lagos, where participants were introduced to the programme structure, expectations, and learning pathways.
Sessions also provided early exposure to business planning, personal branding, and digital marketing strategy, helping participants understand how technical skills connect to income-generating opportunities.
Andy Akukwe noted: “Sustainable impact means thinking beyond the classroom. It means helping learners see how their skills translate into income, confidence, and independence.”
Alignment With the Sustainable Development Goals
Participants complete the programme with improved digital literacy, stronger employability, and viable pathways to employment or entrepreneurship. Impact is tracked through assessments, attendance, and portfolio reviews.
The initiative aligns with several SDGs:
- SDG 4: Quality Education
- SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth
- SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure
- SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities
Support Plugesmile’s Mission
This programme is part of a broader vision. Our goal is not only to transform lives in Lagos, but to scale this digital skills model across underserved communities in Nigeria and other African countries where young people face the same barriers to opportunity. With sustained donor support, we can expand access to training, infrastructure, and mentorship, creating pathways to work, income, and self‑reliance at scale.
